THE GOOSFEATHER KAMISHIBAI

Crowsnest Pass Public Art Gallery -

14737 - 20th Ave, Frank

2 pm – 3:30 pm, Free Admission

A Story about going right 'round our planet with no airplane by master storyteller Naomi Steinberg.

Artist and storyteller Naomi Steinberg was born on Canada's supernatural West Coast in Coast Salish territory. Of French and Jewish descent, she has been performing traditional folk stories and fairy tales, as well as bringing community-based art projects to life, since 2001. www.naomisteinberg.ca

She is currently on tour, sharing her engaging and heartfelt debut book, Goosefeather, with audiences across the country (www.goosefeather.ca). The tour, which started in Vancouver in May, included the Toronto Fringe Festival, where she performed a kamishibai inspired by the book.

Kamishibai is a traditional Japanese storytelling form that utilizes a simple wooden frame with images inside, animated by the performer's voice. The skillful use of graphic imagery, voice and movement makes kamishibai a popular form of street entertainment as well as a successful theatre show.

Goosefeather is a remarkable travelogue and memoir that chronicles Steinberg's 382-day journey, covering 55,965 kilometres around the world by road, rail, land, and sea (without air travel), while performing a playful and profound one-woman show. Beautifully written, in Goosefeather, Steinberg proves her credentials as an engaging storyteller, taking readers on a grand adventure that spans 18 borders by land and sea. From

the red clay of rural France, where her grandfather saved her Jewish grandmother from the Nazis during World War II, to the wild green of California and the winding rice fields of Japan, Steinberg weaves personal reflection with local stories that reveal how cultures make sense of the places that shape them.

Enjoy an afternoon of inspiration and adventure with artist and storyteller Naomi Steinberg as she shares the Goosefeather Kamishibai. Come with your questions about the book, about the kamishibai storytelling technique, and what it's like to be an author on an adventure! The book will be available for purchase.
