MYTH MAKING Exhibit
Historically, in art, many artists have explored Myth in myriad different ways. Contemporary artist Kiki Smith and artist Joseph Beuys are infamous for ‘myth-making’ in very different ways. Artists have toiled over matters of spirituality, philosophy and human conditions for centuries. This is a way for artists to not only explore our own stories and/or questions that can perplex us as humans, but to explore mediums that can open up these stories/questions to enrich our curiosity and understandings and allow others to do the same. ~Deirdre Earl, 2024

110 Anniversary of Hillcrest Mine Disaster
Canada's worst mining disaster
In June 1914, Canada endured its worst mining disaster when an explosion within the Hillcrest coal mine killed 189 workers. The world was shocked, but the impact on the small community of Hillcrest Mines was excruciating as everyone lost a friend, neighbour, husband or father. Most of the victims were buried in two mass graves – one for Catholics and one for Protestants – within the Hillcrest Cemetery, which today is a provincial historic site. One hundred and ten years later, the Crowsnest Pass still remembers the tragedy and mourns the great loss of life. Visitors and residents can view special exhibits at the Crowsnest Museum and the Frank Slide Interpretive Centre.
You can join a Guided Tour of the Hillcrest Cemetery on Saturday from 4 to 5 PM (pre-registration required. ) or pick up the free pamphlet and map for self-guided tours of the Hillcrest Cemetery and the old downtown. Interpretive signs and building plaques throughout Hillcrest tell the story of this small town and its outsized tragedy or take a tour of the Bellevue Underground Mine to experience where miners walked and worked.t
